چکیده

Crithmum maritimum L. (Apiaceae) is a perennial local oilseed halophyte. For a better understanding of the eco-physiology of salt tolerance at the germinative stage of this species, we investigate here the effects of nitrate, thiourea, and priming on its seed germination under saline conditions. Germination was strongly inhibited by increasing salinity. While nitrate supply was effective in alleviating salt-induced seed dormancy under both nonand saline and conditions, thiourea improved germination only at moderate salt concentrations. Priming with both water and NaCl accelerated the germination process on salt free medium, whereas PEG 6000 delayed it in distilled water. The different priming agents used in the present work impaired both germination capacity and germination velocity index at 100 mM NaCl, but seeds remained viable since being able to germinate after their transfer to distilled water.

Changes in secondary metabolites in the halophytic putative crop species Crithmum maritimum L., Triglochin maritima L. and Halimione portulacoides (L.) Aellen as reaction to mild salinity

It is assumed that salinity enhances the concentration of valuable metabolites in halophytes. The objective was to find a salt concentration and a point in time at which the yield for the valuable metabolites was maximal. Therefore, three different halophyte species were grown under different salinities and harvested over a period from shortly after stress induction up to three weeks. Various r...

Seed dormancy and germination of an endangered coastal plant Eryngium maritimum (Apiaceae)

Eryngium maritimum is a coastal plant of the Apiaceae family. This species is threatened in several countries where it reaches the northern limits of its distribution area. Existing populations in the Baltic Region and Scandinavia are potentially affected by the low efficiency of its generative reproduction. We studied physiological aspects of its germination and dormancy breaking requirements ...

Environmental regulation of dormancy loss in seeds of Lomatium dissectum (Apiaceae).

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Lomatium dissectum (Apiaceae) is a perennial, herbaceous plant of wide distribution in Western North America. At the time of dispersal, L. dissectum seeds are dormant and have under-developed embryos. The aims of this work were to determine the requirements for dormancy break and germination, to characterize the type of seed dormancy, and to determine the effect of dehydrati...

Effect of seed pre-treatment with L-arginine on improvement of seedling growth and alleviation of oxidative damage in canola plants subjected to salt stress. Fatemeh Nasibi1, 2*, Khosrow Manouchehri Kalantari1, 2 and Adeleh Barand1

Soil salinity is one of the major abiotic stresses that adversely affect plant productivity and quality. Therefore, an experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of seed treatment with L-arginine on some morphological and physiological parameters of Brassica napus under salinity stress. The seeds of canola were pre-treated with three arginine concentrations (0, 5, and 10µM Arg) for 24 ...
